6th-8th Grade- Advanced LEGO Mindstorms Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math: This week delves deeper into the Lego Mindstorms robotics systems. Attendees will learn more about programming the Mindstorms robots and practice more advanced build techniques while making some cool Lego robot projects.
9th-12th Grade- Python Game Development STEM Camp: This camp will use the popular Python programming language with a game development framework to make simple games. The Python language is currently used in the nationally-recognized Entertainment Arts and Engineering game program. No prior experience is needed, but this camp is aimed at students who show some interest in or aptitude for computers, programming, or math.
STEM Career Talks: Youth will learn about STEM related jobs at Hill AFB through nightly talks with military professionals.
PROGRAM INFORMATION: STEM Camp officially begins at 0900, Monday, 31 July 2017. The program teaches the value of “Design Thinking” building confidence with technology through problem solving and hands-on learning. The educational programs include: robotics, video game design, software design (coding), hardware engineering (circuits) and exploration of Air Force STEM jobs.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Dependent of an Active Duty military assigned to, working or living on an Air Force (AF) Led/Joint Installation, AF Retired military, AF Civilian Employees, Air National Guard (ANG) or AF Reserve
• Youth entering 6th-8th grades and 9th-12th grades
TRAVEL LOGISTICS FOR YOUTH IN THE LOCAL AREA: Youth commuting from the local area are asked to arrive at 1700, Sunday, 30 July 2017 at the Heritage Center (Campus Housing) at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT.
TRAVEL LOGISTICS FOR YOUTH FROM OUTSIDE LOCAL AREA: Youth traveling by plane should plan to arrive no later than 1500 on Sunday, 30 July 2017. Unaccompanied minors will be met by a Hill Youth Program (YP) representative at the airport. Please notify Mr. Alvin (Drew) Ulsh, firstname.lastname@example.org, if your youth is traveling as an unaccompanied minor. Please remember to put Mr. Ulsh’s name as the person allowed to pick up your youth at their arrival gate.
LODGING/SUPERVISION: Youth will stay at the University of Utah Guest Lodging in rooms with youth of the same gender. Hill Youth Program (YP) personnel will provide supervision throughout the week. Hill YP personnel will not be sleeping in the same rooms as the youth. However, Hill YP personnel will be on duty, awake and monitoring hallways.
TRAVEL EXPENSES: Lodging and meal costs are centrally funded beginning with dinner on Sunday, 30 July 2017. Spending money during travel and miscellaneous expenses are the responsibility of the participant. Attendees should bring at least $35 in spending money. Airfare or POV costs to the University of Utah (SLC Airport, if flying) are the responsibility of the attendee. Parents should pay baggage fees in advance for the return trip, if possible, or give to their youth in addition to spending money for their return trip.
WHAT TO BRING: ID cards should be carried at all times. Attendees should bring toiletries, including deodorant, shampoo, and sunscreen. Additional items should include a camera, sunglasses, athletic shoes, rain jacket, and ChapStick. Attendees should bring sufficient clothes for 5 plus days of activities. Laundry facilities are not available.
MEDICATIONS: Required emergency, as needed, medications (inhalers, EpiPens, etc.) will be checked in with Hill YP personnel upon arrival.
DRESS CODE: The majority of activities planned for the STEM Camp are interactive with hands-on experiences. Attendees are expected to dress in appropriate business casual clothing during the week (jeans/slacks, and a collared shirt) and casual dress for out of class times. However, the clothing must be presentable and not offensive. Cheer shorts, shorts with logos across the backside, skirts shorter than mid-thigh, clothes that reveal undergarments, etc., will not be accepted. NOTE: Before you depart please check the weather.
OFF-SITE EXCURSION: Off-site excursion will include the new Lassonde Studios at University of Utah, the Clark Planetarium, Museum of Natural History and STEM related job sites on Hill AFB.
DEPARTING INFORMATION: Local Camp participants will be released at 1500, Friday, 4 August 2017. Youth traveling by plane must depart Salt Lake no later than 1200, on Saturday, 05 August 2017. Hill YP personnel will escort unaccompanied minors to their departure gates.
